Updated (9:23 p.m.) — Authorities say the couple were believed to have been driving to a vacation spot on a dirt road north of San Gorgonio Mountain State Park, which has a large mudflow basin.

A large mudslide has blocked off the dirt road and sent mud and water flowing through the park, flooding homes, threatening one person’s home and prompting rescues.

Three other motorists on the roads were stuck, trapped for two hours and were rescued by the park, officials said. Two of the men were treated for minor injuries and one of the women had to be rescued because she was unconscious with no pulse.

Mudslides have swept through the San Bernardino County area for the past several years. Most recently, a mudslide engulfed a house in San Bernardino and sent mud and water running into a neighboring neighborhood. At least four fatalities have been linked to mudslides in the past two decades.

A huge rainstorm Friday afternoon caused a landslide in the area, and then mudslides washed out a dirt road between the park and a mountain and forced the park closure for several hours.
