American Frances Tiafoe upsets Rafael Nadal in 4th round of US Open

The world’s top-ranked female player saw her lead game end while the world No. 9 retired when Frances Tiafoe’s opponent fell. After serving out the contest, Frances Tiafoe was at 5-5 in the second game of the second set. Rafael Nadal beat her 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) while the Williams sisters both defeated Frances Tiafoe, ending the first day of action of the US Open on Sunday in New York.

Frances Tiafoe started down 3-0 in the second set, holding serve to start the second. Just like the first game, it was Nadal who prevailed with a big forehand winner for the 2-0 lead. Tiafoe finally got her serve in at the 15-30 mark — to make it a two-set match.

With their next match at an hour’s notice, the women’s semifinal matches are scheduled for 2:00 PM ET and 7:00 PM ET/5:00 PM PT and the men’s semifinal matches will be played from 2:00 PM ET to 5:00 PM ET. In the mixed doubles quarterfinals, women’s final matches will begin at 2:00 PM ET. The men’s final will start at 2:00 PM ET.
