Speaking to BBC Sport: “I am just shocked at the way some footballers have spoken; I have never experienced anything like this in any team or in any club in England – and certainly not here.

“I haven’t heard a word more racist – and I have been in the Premier League for 25 years. You don’t think there has been anything more racist in Britain over the past 40 years – you’ve got a problem and a problem I think you will have to deal with.

“I think the big issue now is a fear of the authorities and fear of the English media. I don’t think that there is much wrong with the English media but there is not much I can do to help.

“The media has a job to do and people on the outside will always ask questions, there will always be problems with the behaviour of players. You are probably better served going for your own team as a spectator if you are a Manchester United fan.”
